blogging my way through this smoggy world

Goodbye, Blue

Here at the Faircloth household, we feel like we have lost a family member. Her name was Blue. Blue was our fifteen year old, '95 Ford Explorer. Until now, we were her only owner.

We got Blue when we moved to North Dakota when I was in 8th grade. (Before Blue we had a The Tank, a wood paneled, Buick Estate Wagon.) Here are a few memories of Blue:
  • She is the vehicle I took my drivers' test in and passed, barely. I thought she was very hard to parallel park.
  • Riding through flood water to get back to our house to pick up Missi, our cat, before we evacuated in the big flood of '97.
  • A few months after buying her, the warning light came on- we were concerned and took her in...we eventually got used to this light as it came off and on for no reason for 15 more years.
  • Nearly dying when she slipped on black ice and we did a 360 on HWY 287 in Colorado
  • Driving to NC from ND and Mom having crick in her neck (couldn't drive), Jacob was on crutches (couldn't drive) and I wasn't old enough to drive. Dad drove the entire way.
  • Driving up a ravine to get to the start of a mountain climb.
  • Not being able to get it out of four wheel drive low
  • The Baylor decal I put on her when I got home after my freshman year (it never came off)
  • The duct tape Dad put on the grey leather that had cracked.
She was never a good car and always had problems, but we loved her and have lots of memories. We hope she goes to someone willing to put a lot of love into her...because she is going to need it.

On a funny note, a weird guy in law school is selling his '97 Explorer. He is apparently expecting a lot of interest in his. Here is his advertisement:
Those who are interested in buying my 97 Ford Explorer:

As I may have already contacted you, I am showing my car to anyone who is interested in buying it at 4PM this Monday in the parking lot next to the Native American Center on Princeton. Please be there on time.

Although I have not yet decided who I will sell it to, I would rather sell it to someone who is ready to make a payment without negotiating the price and can bring me a copy of the background or identification, such as a photo copy of your Driver's license, phone bill, and so on. I accept either cash or check for the payment.

If you have any questions, please contact me by email. Thank you.

Phone Home

In North Dakota the only options for cellphone carriers are Verizon & Alltel- and Verizon recently bought Alltel, so really there's only Verizon. Luckily, I am happy with Verizon and very happy that my parents still pay my cellphone bill.

I have a Blackberry that I like a lot. Prior to my Blackberry I had a Palm Treo that I liked a lot. The rumormills are saying Verizon might get access to the iPhone. I wonder if I would like an iPhone more than my Blackberry?!

March Madness

The Bears made it to the Sweet 16! Even though the game was not televised in North Dakota, I got to watch the score ticker at the top of the screen while I watched Northern Iowa beat Kansas. I now have a crush on Northern Iowa player #5 Ali Farokhmanesh. I text messaged a friend who is in law school/who I went to high school with/who was at the game/and who played basketball for Northern Iowa, asking him if I was too old for Ali. He responded that he would check into it for me. However, with a quick facebook search, I learned Ali is in a relationship with some Kayla girl. Whatever.
Plus, the UND Fighting Sioux won their regional conference for hockey last night.

All in all, Saturday was a good day for my teams.

spring training

Today I got on my bicycle trainer, which makes my bike stationary, and did a Coach Troy workout DVD for cyclists. I don't get on my trainer very often and instead try to go to spin class once or twice a week. I feel like I get a good workout at spin class, but I had forgotten how tough Coach Troy is. I got my butt kicked in my own basement.

here goes naanthing

Today I made naan from scratch. Indian food is my favorite ethnic food, so since I am on spring break I decided to cook it for dinner tonight. I have cooked Indian before, but I have never made the naan/bread (I have always bought it frozen).

This is the recipe I used. My older roommates approved! We enjoyed the naan with tikka masala (butter chicken) and basmati rice with lemon and saffron.

Here I am in action.

spring break

If you notice that I seem wiser, you are probably right- I just turned 28. I have the crow's feet to prove it.On Friday morning I drove down to Fargo to see Jillian, Travis, Oscar (boston terrior) and Ernie (pug). It is great to have a college friend who is from North Dakota because I get to see her every time she comes to see her family.

On Saturday morning I drove to Minneapolis for my high school friend's, Katie, bachelorette party. Before the party, I had lunch with a law school friend who had transferred to the University of Minnesota after our first year of school. We talked a lot, ate at a funky restaurant and then shopped.

Then I drove to a Korean grocery store. Revekah has Mother and me addicted to Korean tea and while she sends us a jar every month or so, we wanted to stock up (in case the Japanese ever invade and try to take away our tea). We now have two jars of honey citron, one jar of honey ginger, and one jar of plum. On my way to the tea section I saw the black sesame soy milk and sac-sac (mandarin orange drink with lots of pulp) that Rev. Kim used to hook me up with. In the check out line I grabbed a bag of Milky (milk flavored candy). Go Team Korea!

After considering changing my citizenship, I drove to Katie and Maggie's house. The party started at their house. Dinner was catered in, we played some silly games, and then headed downtown to our hotel. At the hotel we played some more games and then headed to the bars. I am really lucky to have such great high school friends. I don't get to see them often but when we do get together, it is like we never skipped a beat.

Lesson learned the hard way

I have learned a very valuable lesson. That is, stand like a lady- especially in important pictures. What was I thinking to be standing with my legs so far apart, and why did no one say something?! Maybe I have been in North Dakota too long and have forgotten what little I knew of southern graces.
Arg. I am so disappointed in myself. Sorry Lauren for ruining your wedding party picture. (Perhaps D. Jones can photoshop my legs together)

Why yes, I would like another glass

It's official:

Easter has my favorite holiday candy. Bring on the jelly beans, chocolate eggs, and peeps.

The wedding we have all been waiting for

Lauren and Tim got married this past weekend. Mom and I flew down to Houston to celebrate their holy matrimony. Once we landed, we immediately lunched and went shopping. Then we headed to the church for the rehearsal. The bride and all of her bridesmaids made it on time to the rehearsal. Tim and his posse were about an hour and a half late because they had typed in the wrong address to the church. Other than that tiny glitch, everything else went as planned. Lauren was very calm ... her big city attorney aunt was not.

At the rehearsal, waiting for Tim.

After the rehearsal we headed to Cadillac Bar for dinner. The margaritas and Mexican food were to die for. Mom and I sat with Nancy and Reverend Ken (Tim's parents), an aunt of Tim's, and Brian and Megan. Lauren and Tim had put together a picture slideshow. The best part of the slideshow were the pictures of Lauren and Tim, which was played to the tune of "Son of a Preacher Man." After dinner, I dropped Mom off at our hotel and I went out with Baylor friends and got to meet Tim's graduate school friends from Kansas.

At the rehearsal dinner

On Saturday, Mom and I walked at Memorial Park and enjoyed breakfast outside. The weather was beautiful and we were soaking in as much vitamin D as we could. Then we drove to Katie and Tres's house and I got to play with their two labs (Shiner and Miller). Miller was no longer the six pound puppy that he was when I saw him 2 years ago. Katie and I had lunch at La Madeline (ate outside again) and then got our hair done. I wanted lose curls, but had forgotten to bring a picture. Fortunately, the Costa Rican lady knew what I was talking about. Then we went to DSW, the discount shoe mecca.

After shopping, it was time to head to the church. Katie's job was to pick up the dress. She took this job very seriously. You see, Katie is usually fashionably late, but this time- she was the first person at the church. Fortunately, Tim was on time, too!

The wedding was perfect and I cried tears of joy throughout the ceremony. Afterward we danced the night away at the Junior League. There was an amazing ten member band and the champagne was flowing like water.

Congratulations Lauren and Tim!
