blogging my way through this smoggy world

Caution

Learning to crawl may cause injury, but when you're this cute, scratches show off your great cheek structure.

Ruff day at the park

Jane loves the dog park, but it seems like a bad day of junior high to me.

She got nipped by a golden retriever.

And mounted by a poodle.

Jane scared the Easter bunny away

Jane is enjoying spring. While I am in Grand Forks writing papers and preparing for finals, Jane and Caylan go for walks twice a day and their weekends are filled with hiking adventures and dog park romping.

Evening walk around Lake Winona.

Romping at the dog park.

Hiking by the Mississippi River.

"Who would give her up?"

When people learn Jane is a rescue who was abandoned on a rural road in SD, the usual response is, "she's so sweet. who would give her up? I bet she's missed."

We don't know why Jane was abandoned. We do know that she eats a lot, poops a lot, doesn't care for tiny dogs/bunnies/squirrels/cats, and that she is probably an attention-seeking terror when not exercised. However, with an intense physical regimen and strict, consistent training, she is a great dog.

When she was impounded in South Dakota, the pound tried for a month to find her owner. She was in foster care for an additional month. No one came forth. We'll never know why she was abandoned. She's now a member of our family, and I suspect she'd agree with us, that we all got a pretty good deal.

ND visit

Jane loves riding in the car. When Caylan walks her by the college campus in Winona, where there are lots of cars parked on the street, Jane will stop and sit at each car that is similar to his (a silver blue civic).

This past weekend, Jane took an 8 hour road trip to ND. She charmed ND. Her typical way to meet someone is to gallop over to them (which I am sure can be intimidating), do a quick sniff, and then nuzzle in for some affection. We went to the dog park twice and took lots of long runs and walks. She is so athletic! In the dog park, she is all about the sniffing. It was quite funny when she first arrived in the dog park in Grand Forks- about 8 dogs ran up to her, she stood stately and politely, letting them all get a whiff. You could almost hear the other dogs talking, "hey, joe- come over here, there's a new dog in town." There was a guy there with a lacrosse stick chucking tennis balls for the dogs to fetch. I was really hoping Jane would catch on and learn to fetch. Instead she would see a mass of dogs start running in one direction, and she would chase them, easily getting to the front, but not knowing what all the fuss was about. Anyone have any pointers on teaching dogs how to fetch?

We knew Jane was skinny, but after weighing her (front paws on one scale, rear paws on another), we've decided to fatten her up a bit. She weighed in at 89#. To compare, Bradley and Rainier were both considered slim and weighed 120#. We're going to see if we can cover up a few ribs with a little fat and get her up to 100#. I like to joke that she's like her Mama and can't keep the weight on. (Yeah right!)

On the way back to Winona, Jane stopped for a walk around Fergus Falls.
