blogging my way through this smoggy world

Kitchen table wedding

Over our thirty day road trip, Caylan and I decided to get married before the end of the year. We had been engaged for over a year and had initially talked about a summer wedding. But our summer 2012 soiree would conflict with the bar exam, three family weddings. Instead, we planned our ideal wedding: an intimate ceremony with our parents and the minister at our kitchen table with good food simmering and bread baking in the oven. December 8th was a perfect day. Here's how it went:

The table was set and we made espresso and tea for everyone.

We sat down at 11am and Caylan and I thanked everyone for coming and supporting us.

Tim, the minister, opened with a prayer.

My mom read "Falling in Love is like Owning a Dog" by Taylor Mali and adapted it to Winona.

Caylan's dad, Gary, read "On Marriage" by Kahlil Gibran (one of Caylan's late mother's favorite authors).

My dad read from 1 Corinthians 13.

Caylan and I lit a candle in memory of his mother, Linda. Her urn was on the table, next to us. After the wedding, Caylan told me that she would be really proud of us.

We said standard vows and then Tim asked for pledges of support from everyone. Everyone gave their blessing and then we exchanged rings.

We kissed, served the soup (chicken wild rice), tore off crusty pieces of french baguette, and assembled a spinach salad. The minister made a toast (sparkling pear cider) to us and then we feasted.

Everyone signed the marriage license as witnesses.

A friend came over and took pictures.

Afterward we visited my firm (one of the lawyers was working). Then we hiked up to the rock feature, Sugar Loaf, that is a Winona landmark.

Caylan's step mother, Cindy, made this banner for us.

We went to dinner at a nice restaurant outside of town. For dessert we came home and had gelato.

That night Caylan and I stayed at a hotel and our parents stayed at our house.

The following morning we nibbled on coffee cake that my mom made. It had started snowing so everyone left early to beat the storm. What is usually a 7 hour drive to Grand Forks turned into a 12 hour drive. Caylan's dad and step mom hit a slick spot on the way home and ended up in a ditch. Fortunately, my parents were able to pull over and wait with them for the tow truck to come.  Besides the awful drives home, the weekend was perfect. Jane celebrated with a romp at the dog park.
