The Faircloths (and Caylan) spent a week in Colorado recently. Earlier this year I won a silent auction for a week's stay at a condo in Frisco, CO, so we cashed in on the auction and took full advantage of everything in Summit County, CO. We road tripped it down there, too. Caylan did most of the driving- I think my dad was thrilled. We drove into Denver and met Jacob there. The next morning we went on a road ride in Denver and started acclimating to the elevation.
Our first day, we hiked Mount Silverheel. Mount Silverheel did not have a trail, so we spent a lot of time bushwhacking and lost. In fact, we could not find our car and ended up having to slide down a steep, rocky hill to the main highway and then sending Jacob to run on the road and look for the car. Here we are at the top.
The next day we kayaked in Lake Dillion in the morning and did a bike tour of beer brewers in the afternoon (Frisco-Breck-Dillion-Frisco).
On Wednesday we went whitewater rafting with the best outfitter in Colorado and with the best guy in the world. That is, we went rafting through Lakota Guides (owned by Baylor grad John Mark Seeling) and our trip was led by Ryan McCombs, also a Baylor grad and one of my former climbing friends. We rafted Class III rapids on the Arkansas River and even did a cliff jump into the river. All partook in the cliff jumping except Mother.
On Thursday we hiked a 14er, Mount Quandary. It was Caylan's first 14er and he rocked it. We saw lots of friendly mountain goats.
By Friday we were getting pretty tired, so we did an easy, but beautiful hike up McCullough Gulch. There, we hiked next to a river stream up to a lake and waterfall.
Saturday was our last day, so Jacob, Caylan and I road our road bikes up (and down) Vail Pass. There was a bike race going on. So even though we were not part of the race, we were still on the course. I appreciated all the cheering.
It was a great family vacation and I think Caylan enjoyed us as much as we enjoyed him. My folks loved having someone there to take professional photos.
